Legends of Pearls

The Birth of Pearls – from Krishna to Venus

In Hindu culture, pearls are associated with the Moon and symbolize purity and love. According to an ancient legend, the god Krishna descended into the ocean and discovered the first pearl, which he presented to his daughter on her wedding day – as a blessing for fidelity and happiness. From that moment, pearls became a talisman of love and harmony.

The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that wearing pearls strengthened marital harmony and that the bond between Psyche and Cupid was depicted as a string of pearls. To the Romans, pearls symbolized wisdom, wealth, and good fortune. Noble women even slept wearing pearl necklaces to inspire beautiful dreams. According to myth, the goddess of love Venus was born from a seashell – just like a pearl formed from a drop of seawater.

The Legend of the Dragon and the Shining Pearl

In Chinese mythology, the pearl is considered a gift from the heavens. One legend tells of a mighty dragon who guarded a luminous pearl in his mouth – the source of his strength, light, and wisdom. When storm clouds filled the sky, it was said that pearls fell from heaven as drops lost during the dragons’ battles. For this reason, Chinese art often depicts dragons with a pearl – a symbol of knowledge, prosperity, and divine energy.

The Tale of the Grateful Serpent

A lesser-known Chinese story speaks of a ruler who once saved an injured serpent. A year later, the serpent returned and brought him a radiant pearl as a token of gratitude. Since then, pearls have been seen as a bridge between the human and natural worlds, reminding us that acts of kindness always return – sometimes in the most unexpected ways.

Legends of Black and White Pearls

One Polynesian legend tells of Oro, the god of peace and fertility, who descended from the heavens and offered a black pearl to a princess from Bora Bora as a symbol of his eternal love. Since then, black pearls have been cherished as emblems of deep emotion and loyalty.

In many other cultures, the birth of pearls is tied to tears. Ancient stories called them the tears of the gods, while on the island of Ceylon, it was believed that the tears of Adam and Eve formed a lake from which pearls were born – white and pink from Eve’s tears and black from Adam’s. The black pearl became a symbol of rarity and majesty, known as the “Queen of Pearls.”

Pearls as the Elixir of Youth and Wisdom

Throughout history, pearls have been believed to possess magical and healing powers. Mongol rulers drank pearl-infused elixirs to enhance strength and vitality. In India, pearls were worn as protective talismans. The Chinese created medicinal tonics from pearls, believing that black pearls contained the wisdom of the universe. Dragons, they said, forged pearls from heavenly energy and guarded them between their teeth. The Japanese believed pearls were formed from the tears of mythical beings – mermaids, fairies, and angels. The ancient Egyptians treasured their pearls so deeply that they were buried with them, and Queen Cleopatra famously dissolved a pearl in vinegar and drank it to prove she could consume the wealth of a kingdom in a single sip.
