How to care for your pearl jewellery
Pearls are a natural product. They are formed inside mollusks by the gradual layering of calcium carbonate and organic substances that create nacre. Nacre is beautifully lustrous but relatively soft and sensitive – especially to acids and aggressive chemicals.
At Buka Jewelry, we want your pearl jewelry to keep its beauty and value for many years. Below you will find clear recommendations for wearing, cleaning, and safely storing your pearl necklace, pearl bracelet, or pearl earrings.
Proper Wearing and Care
- Be careful with cosmetics and chemicals. Perfumes, hairspray, creams, and cleaning agents can damage the nacre. This also applies to natural cosmetics – natural oils and perfumes can harm pearls as well. Always put on your pearl jewelry last.
- Skin contact benefits pearls. The natural moisture and oils of your skin help maintain their luster. Prolonged storage in an entirely dry environment is not good for pearls.
- Avoid water exposure. Bathing, showering, or thermal waters can damage the surface, weaken settings, and reduce the strength of glued parts. It is good to know that jewelers sometimes use special adhesives that intentionally lose their hold under prolonged exposure to hot water, allowing future repairs.
- Wipe gently after wearing. A soft, dry cloth will remove perspiration and impurities from your pearl necklace or bracelet.
- Clean with care. Use a soft damp cloth or a very mild soap solution. Never use aggressive chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, or steam. Do not use wet wipes – they contain substances that can harm nacre and metal parts.
- Do not wear with other jewelry. Harder gemstones or metal pieces can easily scratch pearls.
Pearl Necklaces and Bracelets on Silk or Nylon Thread
For necklaces and bracelets strung with knots, pearls may loosen over time and the knots may stretch. When you notice this, the jewelry should be restrung. At Buka Jewelry, we are happy to provide this service so your pearl jewelry is once again secure and beautiful.
Proper Storage
- Store separately, preferably in a soft pouch or velvet box to avoid scratches from other jewelry.
- Avoid extreme conditions. Strong sunlight, frost, high heat, or prolonged dryness can damage pearls – changing their color, causing cracks, or drying out the nacre.
- Never hang necklaces or bracelets when storing. Their own weight can stretch the thread and loosen knots – always store them lying flat.
Safety Warnings
- Jewelry is not a toy. Always keep pearl jewelry out of the reach of children – it contains small parts that can be swallowed or inhaled.
- Delicate metal components. Clasps, earring posts, and chains can bend or break if handled roughly. Always treat them with care.
- Avoid shocks and pressure. Both nacre and metal parts can be damaged.
- Do not wear jewelry during sports, manual work, or in environments where it may catch. This poses not only a risk of damage or loss but also potential injury to the wearer.
Other Important Recommendations
- Do not sleep in pearl jewelry. Pressure and friction can scratch nacre and loosen settings.
- Do not place on hard surfaces. Always lay jewelry on a soft surface or in a jewelry box.
- If you suspect damage to your jewelry or its components, contact us at Buka Jewelry – we will be glad to assist you. If needed, any skilled jeweler can also provide advice or repairs.
- Avoid storing in damp or perfumed environments. Bathrooms or wardrobes with cosmetic vapors can gradually dull the luster of pearls.
Important Information on Returns and Claims
- Pearl jewelry can only be returned or exchanged if it has not been worn and is in its original condition.
- If a pearl necklace, bracelet, or earrings are damaged due to improper use or failure to follow care instructions, a claim may not be accepted.
- Read the possible reasons why a claim may be rejected.
